Thursday-Oct. 10, 13
Today is our preparation day. We went early before the Carthage Visitor Center and Jail was opened. We showed Jeff Blake and his friend, Brother Newby the Carthage Jail. It was great to see him and spend a short time with him. He took some pictures and will email them to me tonight. I will put them in when I get them.
After we visited we went to the Nauvoo Temple and then drove over to Burlington to shop. We came back in the afternoon because we needed to be at the Carthage Visitor Center and Jail at 5:30 pm. The Chamber of Commerce of Carthage had their meeting at the Carthage Visitor Center and jail with President Gilliland and his wife and the missionaries that serve in Carthage. The Church is trying to have a good relationship with the people of Carthage and Nauvoo. The LDS Church prepared the meal and we all sat outside to eat. It was really nice to meet the people that live in Carthage or around the town. Elder and Sister Taye showed the jail to all the Chamber of Commerce but it was a little dark to see it very well. They are going to bring the children from school to tour the jail but we will only teach the history side of it. We do not talk about our church. This will be a field trip for the children in Carthage. This is a good thing because the children will feel the spirit inside the jail. Maybe we can help Carthage to except us better and feel closer to us, I mean the Mormons. Their are a lot of different churches here in Carthage and we only have seventeen members here. The members go to Nauvoo to go to church.
